If you’re a contractor or service provider who is looking for leads, you may be tempted to use a lead reselling company like HomeAdvisor, Angie’s List, Porch, Thumbtack, or Houzz. However, it’s important to be aware that these companies sell leads to multiple people at the same time.
It’s no secret that many businesses rely on lead generation to find new customers. And while there are a number of ways to generate leads, one of the most popular methods is through online directories like Angie’s List and HomeAdvisor. But how do these companies actually generate leads? One way is by using alert systems that notify businesses when someone in their area is looking for a service they provide. For example, if a homeowner in your area is looking for a plumber, they may go to HomeAdvisor and submit a request for quotes. Once this request is submitted, HomeAdvisor will send an alert to plumbers in the area, including your business.
I recently spoke with somebody who spends $1300 a month buying leads from HomeAdvisor. I asked him a bit about his experience and he told me that he often has difficulty connecting with people; many never answer their phone or are grumpy when he calls. He only talks to like two of them. In the last 3 months, he’s spent almost $4000 on leads and he actually didn’t even break on the jobs that he got from it, so this is huge and he wasn’t aware that HomeAdvisor is selling leads to multiple people and it goes further than that. This is a huge problem and something that needs to be addressed.
It’s important to remember that you’re not the only one who will receive the alert. In fact, it’s likely that several other businesses will receive the same alert. This means that you could be competing with other businesses for the same customer. In addition, these companies often charge high fees for leads, which can eat into your profits. So, while lead reselling companies may seem like a convenient option, they’re not always the best choice for your business. It’s important to do your research and evaluate all of your options before making a decision.
HomeAdvisor and Angie’s List to Merge Into One Company with Two Brands
First of all Angie’s List has finally agreed to be acquired by IAC. After the deal closes, Angie’s List is now combined with HomeAdvisor, so a bunch of musical chairs and I honestly think they’re just changing their names to get away from all the bad nasty reviews that there are online about them. Anyway the point of this part is that if you know you’re using Angie’s list you’re getting leads from Homeadvisor and vice versa and I know that because some of my clients use HomeAdvisor and Angie’s list and they’ll get the same lead from both places at the same time and they’ll ask people like hey how did you find me oh I put in my info on Angie’s list even though they bought the lead from HomeAdvisor so it isn’t that big deal but you should know that if you’re buying there’s no reason to buy both of these sites.
So the question is whether or not it’s a good idea for a contractor to use home advisor and these other third-party websites.
If you’re buying leads, you need to call them immediately. The leads that you’ll get from sources like Google or your website are different than the leads you’ll get from other places. Typically, when someone reaches out to you through your website, they’ve already vetted you to some degree. They’ve read your reviews and looked at your work. But with other lead sources, that’s not always the case. So it’s important that you reach out to them as soon as possible. If you wait too long, they may have already decided to go with someone else. But if you’re quick to act, you could win. So if you’re buying leads, make sure to call them right away.
One of my friends, who owns a remodeling company, tells me that many of his new clients call him via website, thanks to the positive reviews they’ve read online. And because his website is full of before-and-after photos of his work, potential customers can get a good sense of his style and quality before they even pick up the phone. That doesn’t happen on HomeAdvisor, Angie’s List and many other services that send leads to multiple people at once. You need to be aware of this so you can call them right away or beat your competitors who might have gotten their listing first! In other words, the Internet has made it easier than ever for people to find and connect with businesses like my friends. And that’s good news for everyone involved.
